The tor&co relationship with University of Surrey extends for more than 20 years. Originally asked to consult on the planning and environmental impact of expansion of the campus including removing 70ha of land from the green belt, we have gone on to deliver some breakthrough projects that have contributed to the wellbeing of students, benefitted the local community, and enhanced the University’s reputation.

We gained permission for the 5G Innovation Centre in 2013. Housing 170 researchers and attracting £70m investment, the centre is the world’s largest dedicated to next generation mobile technology.

An interdisciplinary tor&co team delivered permission for Surrey Sports Park. A key element of the campus, the centre includes first-class sports facilities, that provide a base for international and domestic sports squads and which are open to be enjoyed by both students and the local community.

The internationally recognised veterinary school, consisting of three separate buildings, opened in 2015. We devised a successful planning strategy to bring the site to life for future vets and their animal patients.

We are currently partnering with the University on a plan to construct 1850 new homes, the profits from which will be directly reinvested to ensure the campus and its facilities offer a first-class environment in which to learn, research, teach, work and play.

In the time we have worked together, student numbers have grown from 8000 to 14000 and the university has been awarded multiple accolades for student experience and graduate opportunity. We continue to work together with the university on projects which benefit both student and local communities.
