North Whiteley
North Whiteley

I was the lead EIA coordinator for a major new community at North Whiteley in Hampshire, consisting of 3,500 homes, three schools, two local centres, a range of public open space and a link road. The site is very ecologically sensitive, as it contains several sites of importance for nature conservation and a number of protected species populations, is bordered by a SSSI and is close to the River Hamble SPA, SAC and Ramsar site.

In addition to coordinating the EIA team, liaising with consultees and drafting the ES, tor&co also carried out the assessments of cultural heritage, natural heritage, landscape and visual, land use and socio-economic effects to help ensure the successful delivery of this significant development.

Northstowe

I acted as lead EIA coordinator for phase 1 of the Northstowe new town north west of Cambridge, which included 1,500 homes, a primary school, employment land, a local centre and public open space. My role included coordinating the EIA team, liaising with consultees, drafting the ES, undertaking the socio-economic assessment and a sustainability assessment, as well as carrying out a sustainability appraisal of the wider new town development framework.

The provision of a proportionate but robust ES was key in addressing stakeholder concerns regarding the development of this site, both in relation to phase 1 and the potential for cumulative effects with later development phases, enabling planning permission to be secured for this thriving new community.

Portland

I managed a large EIA team for this complex development, which is designed to process 183,000 tonnes of refuse-derived fuel a year. The site is very environmentally sensitive, as it is in close proximity to internationally important nature conservation sites and the Dorset and East Devon Coast (Jurassic Coast) World Heritage Site. We worked closely with statutory consultees throughout the pre-application and post-submission processes to ensure that robust environmental information was provided at all stages to allow the potential environmental effects of the project to be fully understood.

The proposed development aims to provide not only residual waste management, but also shore power for Portland Port and the potential to supply combined heat and power to other users in the surrounding area.
